Feather Focus yarn palette

Standard

It’s that time of year to prepare for autumn colors. The Feather Focus palette is constructed of Red Heart Super Saver in Gold, Pumpkin, Café Latte, Brick and Coffee. You don’t need to use these specific yarns, of course; simply select similar colors from your favorite fiber.

Courage —crochet square pattern

Standard

Big fat shells take center stage in this lively, but simple square, rendering it extra-cushy (technical term). ;)

This pattern is written in US terms.
Skill level for this square is EASY.

Yarn: Worsted/Aran
Hook: 4mm (G/6)
Final Size: 6”

OR

Yarn: DK/Sport
Hook: 3.5mm (E/4)
Final Size: 5”

If the square is working up too small, switch to a larger hook; if working up too large, switch to a smaller hook.

= chain
dc = double crochet
rep = repeat
sc = single crochet
sk = skip
sl st = slip stitch
sp = space
st/sts = stitch/stitches

SPECIAL DEFINITIONS

Form a ring
= Magic Circle [see video], Chain2 Ring [see video], OR chain 4, sl st into first ch to form a ring

First dc in any round = use Stdc (standing dc) [see video] OR ch3

* to ** = Asterisks designate a section to be repeated

A number followed by an x indicates how many repeats; 4x = repeat four times

( ) = parentheses indicate stitches to be worked in the same stitch or space

midpoint-dc = in this pattern, the center stitch of a 9dc shell, at which there are 4 dc to either side

BLO = back loop only: insert hook into the back loop, then complete the stitch as usual. For best results, also include the back bar. [see video]

join = sl st the final stitch of the round to the first stitch of the round

Form a ring.

Round1: 10sc into ring; join.

Round2: (9dc), ch1, sk4, (9dc), ch1; join.

Round3: * (9dc) in ch1 sp, ch1, sk4, (9dc) in midpoint-dc, ch1, sk4 **; rep once more, join.

Round4: beg in any ch1 sp with (2dc) in ch1 sp, ch3, sk4, sc in midpoint-dc, ch3, sk4, (2dc, ch3, 2dc) in ch1 sp —corner made; * ch3, sk4, sc in midpoint-dc, ch3, sk4, corner in ch1 sp **; rep 2x more; ch3, sk4, sc in midpoint-dc, ch3, sk4, (2dc) in ch1 sp, ch3; join.

Round5: * corner in corner, (2sc) in ch3 sp, (9dc) in sc, (2sc) in ch3 sp **; rep 3x more, join.

Round6: * corner in corner, 4dc, ch1, sk3, 3sc, sk3, ch1, 4dc **; rep 3x more, join. [To include an attractive “squiggle” with this round, do corners as usual, but work BLO for the other stitches.]
